GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF INDUSTRIAL BITUMEN:
The properties of bitumen are essentially determined by the composition of the mineral oil used as feedstock. The amount of paraffins, asphalt resins, oils and asphaltenes in crude oil determines the quality of bitumen.
The density of bitumen varies between 950 and 1300 kg/m3 (at 25°C). It is a black shiny material with a low melting point. If continuously heated, it softens and becomes plastic and then a liquid, but re-solidifies after cooling.
Hot bitumen can cause burns in contact with skin. The use of personal protective equipment is recommended. Do not use water to extinguish the fire. These materials are flammable, so extinguishing agents (sand, extinguishers) and prohibition signs must be placed in the storage area.
INDUSTRIAL BITUMEN USE:
- Building insulation,
- insulation panel production.
- production of bituminous mastics and patches: various fillers (stone-powder, chopped mineral fibres, etc.) are mixed with the plasticine material. The resulting usually well-spreadable bituminous paste is used to seal cracks, gaps, corners and edges. The patch can be applied by smearing or plastering.

HAZARD LEVEL:
- In solid state, bitumen has no harmful effects on the environment or health.
- Care must be taken to ensure that the bitumen is free of water, as water will cause the hot bitumen to foam and increase the risk of scalding.
